Most men are washing their jeans wrong — and that is why their favourite pair loses shape after two months, fades in patches, or ends up half a size smaller than the day they bought it. Jeans are one of the few pieces in your wardrobe designed to look better with age, but only if you treat them like the heavy, dye-loaded, structured garment they are.
This is the short version of everything you need to know.

Denim is not a t-shirt. It does not need to go in the machine every wear. Every wash strips indigo, breaks down cotton fibres, and warps the shape you finally broke in.
A simple rule that works for most men:
Between washes: hang them to air out overnight, brush off surface dirt with a soft brush, and spot-clean small marks with a damp cloth and a drop of gentle soap.
Do these three things every time:
The three settings that matter:
| Setting | Use | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Water temperature | Cold (30 °C / 86 °F or lower) | Heat is what fades indigo and shrinks cotton |
| Cycle | Gentle / delicate / hand-wash | Less agitation = less fibre breakdown |
| Detergent | Small amount of mild liquid (ideally a dark-wash or denim-safe formula) | Powder can leave streaks; bleach and brighteners destroy indigo |
Skip fabric softener. It coats the fibres and dulls the finish denim is supposed to have.
Wash jeans with other jeans or dark items only. New dark denim will bleed for the first several washes — never mix with white shirts, light chinos, or sportswear.

The dryer is where good jeans go to die. High heat shrinks the cotton, twists the leg seams, and can bake in creases you did not want. Even a "low" setting still cooks the fibres.
The rule is simple: air dry only.
There is a correct posture for hanging jeans:

They will take longer than the dryer — usually 6–12 hours depending on weather — but the payoff is a pair that keeps its shape, colour, and structure for years instead of months.
Between real washes, do this:
Raw denim is unwashed dark indigo denim that develops fades based on how you wear it. The rules change slightly:
The goal is to let the natural high-contrast fades (whiskers at the hips, honeycombs behind the knees) develop from your body and movement, not from the drum of a washing machine.

Do:
Do not:
How often should men wash jeans? Every 8–10 wears for regular dark or mid-blue jeans, unless they are visibly dirty, sweaty, or smell. Raw denim can go much longer between washes.
Can you machine wash jeans? Yes — on cold, gentle cycle, turned inside out, with mild detergent, and washed only with other dark items. The machine is not the enemy; heat and heavy agitation are.
How do you wash jeans without fading them? Cold water, inside out, mild dark-safe detergent, no bleach, no fabric softener, air dry out of harsh direct sun. Fewer washes overall is the biggest single factor.
Should you dry jeans in the dryer? No. Air drying protects the shape, size, and colour. If you must use a dryer in an emergency, use the lowest heat setting and pull them out while still slightly damp to finish air drying.
How do you stop jeans from shrinking? Wash cold and never machine dry. Heat is the main cause of shrinkage. If jeans have already shrunk, wearing them for a few hours often stretches them back into shape.
Is it OK to wash jeans with other clothes? Only with other jeans or dark, similarly heavy items. Never wash denim with white shirts, light chinos, workout gear, or towels — the dye and abrasion will damage both.
Wash jeans less often, cold, inside out, with mild detergent — then air dry them by the waistband. Do that and a good pair will still look sharp long after the men who dryer-cook theirs are already replacing them.
